FDOT Submits Proportionate Share Report

As part of the Community Planning Act, FDOT was tasked with preparing a report for the Legislature on the calculation of proportionate share contributions under s.163.3180(5)(h)3. This report was submitted on December 15, 2011 and can be read here.

EPA Announces Smart Growth
Achievement Awards

Earlier this month, EPA announced the five recipients of the 2011 Smart Growth Achievement Awards. They include projects in St. Louis, MO (historic neighborhood redevelopment); Albuquerque, NM (LEED Platinum-certified affordable housing project); El Paso, TX (TOD plan); Howard, SD (green building); and Normal, IL (roundabout which evolved into civic gathering place). Envisioning the Future of
Our Communities

The Future We Want (FWW) is a global initiative to envision what people want their lives and communities to be like 20 years from now. FWW is using a variety of methods to gather ideas about the future from people around the globe. The ideas will be made visible at the UN’s conference on sustainable development, RIO +20, next June. If you are interested in seeing what comments are being made or want to submit your own ideas, click here.

 

2012 Better Community Award Nominations Sought

1000 Friends of Florida is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Better Community Awards. Each year they honor citizens, organizations, communities and projects which make Florida a smarter, more sustainable place to live. Nominations are due by January 31, 2012. Details can be found here.

 

Practicing Planner Focuses on Community Planning Act

APA's Practicing Planner includes several articles on Florida's 2011 growth management legislation. The articles include perspectives by Merle Bishop, Tim Brown, Mary Gibbs, and Tom Pelham. The articles are in the December, 2011 issue (Vol. 9, No. 4) of Practicing Planner which will be posted here late December.

A Conversation with Funders of
Community Land Trusts

The community land trust (CLT) movement has grown steadily in the United States over the past several decades. Today there are approximately 240 CLTs in 45 states and Washington, D.C. The philanthropic community’s initial and ongoing support has made much of this growth possible. In order to understand why these organizations are drawn to community land trusts, the National Housing Institute interviewed 15 funders from 13 foundations whose scope encompassed all levels. Policy Workshop

The application window for the May 2012 AICP Exam opened on December 1st. The final application deadline is January 24, 2012. The exam will be held during the period of May 7-21, 2012. For more information, click here.
