THREE FLORIDA COMMUNITIES NAMED AMERICAN CROWN COMMUNITIES American City & County Magazine named three Florida communities as American Crown Communities 2010 for exhibiting "the qualities that build strong communities: cooperation, creativity and leadership" evidenced through the development of specific projects. The three include Coral Gables (Coral Gables Museum Project), Hollywood (5th Avenue Public Safety Training and Maintenance Facility) and Pinellas County (Public Works Operation and Vehicle Storage Buildings). EPA SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR CARE GRANT PROGRAM EPA is seeking applications for Community-Based Environmental Grants to help communities address local health and pollution issues. Applications for the CARE grants are due March 22, 2011, 4:00 p.m. EST. EPA will conduct three webcasts to answer questions from prospective applicants about the application process on February 8, February 23, and March 2 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information, go to http://www.epa.gov/care/ . |

SEAPORT PLAN NOW AVAILABLE The 2010 Florida Seaport System Plan was released by the Florida Department of Transportation in December. The plan was developed to ensure the State of Florida's actions with respect to its seaports are guided by a strategic system-wide approach. NEW REPORT LOOKS AT LINK BETWEEN SMART GROWTH AND PROSPERITY A new report from the Center for Clean Air Policy, titled "Growing Wealthier: Smart Growth, Climate Change and Prosperity", concludes that reorienting where we live and how we travel will also make us wealthier and better prepared for a 21st century economy. As part of its findings, the report looks at communities, such as Dallas and Denver, which improved quality of life and economic growth through increased transportation options and more efficient land use strategies. APA ANNOUNCES ADVANCED SPECIALITY CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS On December 1st, APA announced that it is now accepting applications for the first-ever Advanced Specialty Certification (ACS) examinations. ASC enables qualified AICP certified planners to earn an additional credential attesting to their in-depth knowledge, experience, and leadership skills in a specialized field of planning. Applications for the AICP Certified Transportation Planner and AICP Certified Environmental Planner examinations will remain open through March 30, 2011, with the exams administered in May. Visit the APA website for more information about the ASC program and the two new advanced credentials.
COMMUNITY PLANNING ASSISTANCE TEAM APPLICATION PERIOD NOW OPEN APA is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Community Planning Assistance Team (CPAT) program. The CPAT is a place-based initiative designed to bring planning resources and opportunities to communities with a demonstrated need for assistance. APA Chapters and Divisions are encouraged to help spread the word about this opportunity to both communities and planning experts. Community applications will be accepted through February 22, 2011 for the first application window. The second will open in the summer 2011. FORM BASED CODE AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT The Board of Directors of the Form-Based Codes Institute (FBCI) is pleased to announce its fifth annual award for achievement in the writing and implementation of Form-Based Codes. Entries should be codes intended to guide development consistent with a master plan, and should advance the field of Form-Based Code writing. Submitted codes must have been adopted into law by a unit of local government. Submission of codes that show built results and "lessons learned" is encouraged.
