STATE AND FEDERAL HIGHLIGHTS
NEW POLL SHOWS AMERICANS SUPPORT PUBLIC TRANSIT, WALKING AND BIKIING
A new poll, released in late March by Transportation for America, shows support for increased access to public transportation and safe walking and biking. Central to the poll's findings was strong support for increased transportation options, and accountability for future spending, across both geographic areas and political lines. More than four-in-five voters (82 percent) say that "the United States would benefit from an expanded and improved transportation system," that includes rail and buses. This view is held by an overwhelming majority of voters in every part of the country. Even in rural America, 79 percent of voters agreed with the statement, despite much lower use of public transportation compared to urban Americans.  Read more about the poll findings, including a detailed presentation on the findings at http://t4america.org/resources/2010survey .

REPORTS, PUBLICATIONS AND BRIEFINGS

HOW TO FIX THE HIGHWAY SYSTEM
Two new reports recently released offer two different approaches to fixing the national highway system.  U.S. PIRG argues for a "Fix It First" approach in its report "Road Work Ahead: Holding Government Accountable for Fixing America's Crumbling Roads and Bridges".  In their report "Unlocking Gridlock", the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials focus on relieving urban congestion.  The former report can be accessed at https://pincdn.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/51f120ddc2dc65377559be673f84743b/Road-Work-Ahead-vUS.pdf and the latter at http://expandingcapacity.transportation.org/unlocking_gridlock/gridlock.html .

INSIDE AN URBAN WATER SYSTEM
Urban water systems are immense -- and little-understood. Places presents a video from the Center for Urban Pedagogy looking down below the streets to illuminate the mystery city water delivery. New York City is the case study in this video, which shows where the city's water comes from and where it goes after it trickles down the drain. It is an interesting take on a type of public infrastructure that we tend to take for granted.  To view the 24 minute video, go to http://places.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=13448 .
