AGRICULTURE'S ROLE IN CAP AND TRADE
The American Farmland Trust has developed a cap and trade tutorial focusing on how farmers are helping to reduce the impacts of climate change. The "Farmers Combating Climate Change 101" tutorial explains how a "cap and trade" system will work and why farmers will be  an important part of the equation.  The tutorial also includes a glossary of climate change terms.  To view the tutorial, go to

GOVERNORS' GUIDE TO GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Governors' Institute on Community Design offers the online resource, "Policies that Work: A Governors' Guide to Growth and Development". This free resource lays out a systematic approach to smart growth policymaking at the state level. It is designed to provide governors and their staff and cabinet secretaries with hundreds of ideas about policies, administrative actions, and spending decisions that have actually produced smarter growth in other states -- ideas and outcomes that they may be able to replicate in their own states. The guide is available at
http://www.govinstitute.org/policyguide/.

REPORT ON THE REVITALIZING OLDER CITIES CAPITOL HILL SUMMIT
Over 300 stakeholders from older industrial cities throughout the Northeast and Midwest region attended the Revitalizing Older Cities Capitol Hill Summit, February 11-12, 2009. Attendees included mayors, city officials, Members of Congress and their staff, academics, representatives and leaders of foundations, community-based organizations, public and private developers, and nonprofit organizations. They came to develop a federal agenda that would change federal policies that contribute to sprawl development, and to encourage investment in and support for the nation's core cities and towns. To learn more about the summit discussions and conclusions, you can read the report at http://www.nemw.org/ROCSummitReport.pdf.

LAND USE STRATEGIES TO EXCEL IN DIGITAL WORLD
1000 Friends of Wisconsin offers their ''New Communities for a New Economy: Land Use Strategies to Excel in the New Digital World'' report on their website. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, it examines land use strategies to attract high-tech workers and industries to Wisconsin communities. Second, it examines planning strategies to ensure new industries do not compromise the integrity of Wisconsin's landscape and quality of life. The report can be accessed at http://www.1kfriends.org/Publications/Online_Documents/New_Economy/New_Economy.htm.

SURVEY SHOWS FARMLAND PRICES DOWN
A 2008 Florida Land Value Survey, conducted by the Food and Resource Economics Department of UF, indicate clearly that land values are down statewide in Florida. Decreases in farmland value are comparable in both the northern and southern regions of the state. Declines in farmland value in the northern region range between 6.9 and 24.8 percent. Declines in farmland value in the southern region range between 4.9 and 26.1 percent. The largest decline in the northern region of the state was for farm woods at 24.8 percent. The largest decline for the southern region is unimproved pastureland at 26.1 percent.  Land sales experts indicated that decreases in the value of Florida agricultural lands were primarily due to a weak nonagricultural demand for land and that farmland ownership continued to be investment-based, not income-based. SMALL FARMS ALTERNATIVE ENTERPRISES WEBSITE
The vast majority of Florida's nearly 44,000 farms are classified as small farms.  Calculated on an area or on an economic basis, nearly 90% of all Florida farms are small farms.  Recent increased efforts to meet the educational needs of small farmers in Florida became visible through the work of the University of Florida/IFAS and Florida A&M University Small Farms Focus Team.  Efforts have included the development of an extensive website specifically targeted at small farmer needs.  The site (http://smallfarms.ifas.ufl.edu) receives over 70,000 hits monthly and includes a calendar of small farms events. A conference, Sustaining Small Farms; Strengthening Florida's Communities, will be held in Ocala on August 1-2, 2009.  Go to http://smallfarms.ifas.ufl.edu/floridasmallfarmsconference/index.htm#Top for details.
