FAPA'S 2004 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
|
|

|
|
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
|
|
|
|
Make plans NOW to attend FAPA's
2004 Annual Conference, October
13-16, 2004, at the Hilton/University of
Florida Hotel and Conference Center in
Gainesville.
Hosted by the San Felasco Section, this is the first time that the
Conference has been held in Gainesville
and San Felasco members are eager to share some of their
wonderful areas and planning projects with you. This year's theme
is "No Place Like Home." Gainesville is
known statewide and nationally for being a "city in a forest"
(the Emerald City).
The city is also the home of the University
of Florida, now the third largest
university in the nation (a place where young people come in as scarecrows
and leave as gators...).
This year's conference keynote speakers include Thaddeus Cohen,
the new Secretary of the Florida Department of Community Affairs; the
President of the Congress for New Urbanism and former Mayor of Milwaukee,
John
Norquist; and Parris Glendening,
President of the newly formed Smart Growth Leadership Institute. In
addition to these outstanding speakers, numerous special events are
planned, including a Leadership Roundtable on APA Membership and
Diversity, with Mary Kay Peck, AICP, APA President; Mike McAnelly,
FAICP, APA Region III Director; and Mike Southard,
AICP, AICP Region III.
The conference tracks are well suited to the delights of the Gainesville
area - the abundant springs and natural areas are a great backdrop to the
water and environment track. Gainesville's
successes with transit development, traffic calming and innovative
transportation, and the city, county and regional redevelopment
efforts enhance the transportation and growth management sessions. The University
of Florida will be involved in the
professional development training to round out what is hoped to be a
great conference program.
The mobile workshops to Cedar Key, north Florida
springs, canoeing on the Santa Fe,
cycling the Gainesville-Hawthorne Rail-trail, hiking in San Felasco
Hammock and highlights of local redevelopment and innovative planning
projects are not to be missed. We hope the receptions at the Museum
of Natural History, the University
of Florida Touchdown Terrace
and in downtown Gainesville will
end each day on a fun and social note!
Do you have a heart? A brain? The
courage? Join the San Felasco Section in Gainesville and register now!

OLD
CHINA HANDS RECEPTION
|
|
|
|
Attention Old China
Hands - FAPA Needs You!
Do you remember the tradition of FAPA's Old China
Hands reception, when the casual mixer offered members, old and new, the
chance to renew friendships, enjoy successes, commiserate misfortunes
(hopefully, they were few) and mentor new planners? We would like
to return to that tradition and revive the camaraderie and warmth of the
Old China Hands mixer. At those events, it was customary to pass the hat
among "old china hands" to help cover certain expenses.
Therefore, we are asking you to consider making a small donation (no more
than $20) to the Old China Hands Mixer for the 2004 FAPA Conference. We
made this request for the 2003 Conference, and many Old China Hands
graciously and generously responded. Your check should be made payable to
"Florida APA" and mailed to Florida Chapter APA, 2040
Delta Way, Tallahassee, Florida 32303.
There will be appropriate recognition at the event. Thank you for you
contribution and please do not hesitate to contact Sheri Coven at (850)
201-FAPA with any questions. Please note that this is not a tax
deductible donation.
