Gold Coast's 2013 First Professional Development Lunch Event

Gold Section's first professional development event of the year was a great success. Former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, author of "Miami Transformed: Rebuilding America One Neighborhood, One City at a Time," engages us in a lively conversation about the critical role of planning, and how we planners must step up and become more vocal to bring about needed change, both as professionals and as citizens.

Thanks to our speaker, for inspiring a great afternoon of dialogue. And thank you, DDA, for hosting Gold Coast in your beautiful conference room!

Join us there again soon for our next event, which will focus on the next wave of major downtown development inspired by transit. Stay tuned for details!

Active Design Guidelines

The Active Design Guidelines event of January 11,2013 at Miami-Dade College (Wolfson), a joint effort between our section, AIA Miami's Committee on the Environment and USGBC, was a resounding success!

Approximately 50 attendees had the opportunity to see presentations from Karen K. Lee, MD, MHSc, FRCPC, Director of the Built Environment Program at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and Fredric M. Bell, FAIA, Executive Director, AIA New York Chapter. Their presentations were followed by a very interesting panel, including planners and public health professionals who discussed local initiatives and the challenges that we face in South Florida to become more active by design.

Participants were also able to take a tour of Miami Dade College's new classroom building (the first in South Florida that follows the Active Design Guidelines) guided by building architect Bernard Zyscovich.

We look forward to future collaborations with AIA Miami, possibly a follow up FitCity Miami conference! NOTE: AICP credits will soon be available for those who attended this event.
