The Capital Area Section and the Florida Chapter, APA and the Apalachee Section of the Florida Planning and Zoning Association are pleased to announce another exciting Public Policy Workshop scheduled for our members statewide. This year’s agenda will include a panel on two significant Supreme Court decisions, Kelo v. City of New London and Lingle v. Chevron. Understanding the implications of these decisions and their impact in Florida is particularly important given the creation by House Speaker Allan Bense of a Select Committee on Eminent Domain and the legislation that may be generated by this Committee’s work. Paul Farmer, Executive Director of APA will be joining us as part of a distinguished panel of experts to address these important issues. In addition, the Governor recently appointed a Coastal High Hazard Study Committee. With the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons still fresh in our minds, particularly following the devastating life and property losses from Hurricane Katrina and the Florida hurricanes from the previous year, the work of this committee may have significant public policy implications and is a timely topic for this workshop. Of course, a FAPA Public Policy Workshop would not be complete without a discussion of SB 360 and its potential for a glitch bill, the perspectives of various Tallahassee lobbyists, and presentations from key Legislators who play a significant role in the growth management legislative arena. The Public Policy Workshop will be preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m. the evening of January 24, 2006, so make plans to arrive a day early. Please direct any questions to FAPA’s Executive Director, Sheri Coven, at 850.201.3272 or fapa@floridaplanning.org.
