Mobile Workshops:From the coast to the Everglades, the new to the old, or the innovative to the reimagined, the 2011 Mobile Workshops are seven tours with something for every conference goer. You’ll be energized by the new technologies in the region that are producing solar power, burning urban waste, or learning about the wind energy opportunities for our future. Alternative Energy Options Noon – 5:00 pm Wednesday September 7 The development, siting, and operation of alternative energy sources have become increasingly important resulting in a variety of planning issues to be addressed at all levels of government. This tour includes site visits to (1) the recently completed FPL Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Indiantown which will relieve the need for fossil fuels to operate combined cycle turbine electric generators at the Martin Power Plant and (2) the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority Resource Recovery Facility in central Palm Beach County which uses a variety of systems to extract commodities from the urban waste stream and create electric energy that it sells back to FPL. Enroute to/from these sites, planners and other professionals involved in implementing the proposed use of wind turbines and other mechanisms for generating electric power will discuss those efforts and their associated planning issues. Abacoa Jupiter Regional Biomedical District Noon – 5:00 pm Wednesday September 7 Spend an afternoon learning how Abacoa, a 14-year old traditional master planned urbanist community in the Town of Jupiter, has become a focal point for a major regional biomedical district in northern Palm Beach County. Abacoa provides a mix of pedestrian friendly integrated uses and architecturally diverse housing types, centered around a downtown center co-located with the McArthur Campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Roger Dean Stadium, spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins. The arrival of the Scripps Florida Research Institute in 2006 served as the basis for the creation of a major biomedical district on the adjacent lands. The tour includes stops at Scripps Florida, Max Planck, FAU, local neighborhoods, and the Abacoa Greenway, stadium and town center. City Place / Clematis Street Walking Tour 2:30 – 5:30 pm Thursday September 8 See firsthand the continuing evolution of a highly successful public private partnership between the City of West Palm Beach and the local business community. Learn how City Place got its start, incorporating existing buildings, features, and concepts in its design. Hear about the relationship between City Place and the Downtown area, the on-going transformation of Clematis Street, the new City Commons and Waterfront projects, the current challenges they are dealing with, and their impacts on the downtown redevelopment process. The tour will begin in City Place, travelling along Rosemary Avenue and Clematis Street, and end at the City’s Waterfront Pavilion where the evening reception will be held. Historic Palm Beach 7:45 am – 12:15 pm Friday September 9 Downtown Redevelopment Success Stories 7:45 am – 12:15 pm Friday September 9 Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) activities play an integral role in maintaining the viability of local governments and are often linked to historic preservation activities. Tour four coastal Palm Beach County Downtown areas that highlight CRA redevelopment efforts that are shaping the dynamics of the downtowns of West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. Each CRA will discuss the challenges faced and techniques used to create notable downtowns surrounded by livable communities. Everglades Restoration 7:45 am – 12:15 pm Friday September 9 Restoring America’s Everglades is a massive landmark effort that involves a partnership among many federal, state, regional, and local agencies, working in cooperation with numerous stakeholders in the public and private sector. Tour three successful working examples of these partnerships in Palm Beach County including the South Florida Water Management District Stormwater Treatment Area 1W, the Village of Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat, and the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Bicycle Tour of Palm Beach Historical Sites 2:45 – 5:30 pm Friday September 9 Indulge yourself in a leisurely tour of the northern portion of Palm Beach Island, including local neighborhoods and the bike path along the Intracoastal behind the Flagler Museum (Whitehall). Learn about the architectural history of the island, the bike path, and associated legal issues while observing the many unique architectural styles that exist side by side.
