- Sun Coast Mentoring Programs – MAPS and CAMPs Help Guide Students and Mid-Level Professionals March 8, 2018
The Sun Coast Section offers two opportunities for mentoring and coaching:
The Mentor a Planning Student (MAPS) program matches USF Masters of Urban and Regional planning students with area practitioners. This program typically runs from October to May.
The MAPS program is a partnered initiative between the University of South Florida Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program and the APA Florida Sun Coast Section. Originally launched in 2015, the program has successfully matched over 100 planners and students, benefiting both students and the local planning community. The program extends from October to May. Perks include enhanced internship recruitment, local talent retention, and leadership development for both mentor and mentee. Student mentees value the program because they gain exposure to different career paths and professionals. The practitioner community enjoys the rewards of mentoring as well as the opportunity to connect with future talent.
MAPS information, application and checklists can be downloaded here.
Career Advancement for Mid-Level Planners (CAMPs) provides coaching for mid-level planners interested in career advancement. These planners are matched with local planning executives and leaders.
The CAMPs program runs annually from May to November. The program is based on the successful launch of the section’s MAPS program and is open to mid-level planners in the Sun Coast Section who are interested in growing their careers through a “match” in a voluntary coaching program. This program is open to a wide variety of career objectives, including; transitioning into management, enhancing leadership capabilities, and becoming a more effective and successful planner. This guidebook is designed to provide ideas and suggestions for a successful coaching relationship.
