- 2016/2017 Sun Coast Section Mentor a Planning Student Program August 17, 2016
Please consider signing up as a mentor or mentee through the USF/APA Sun Coast Mentor a Planning Student (MAPS) program! Last year’s participants described the program as “wonderful,” “fantastic,” and a “great experience.”
The program is designed to expose students and emerging professionals to the work environments, responsibilities, and interactions of of professional planners in Florida. The program runs from October 2016 to April 2017 and has three basic requirements: 1) an in-office shadowing experience, 2) an out-of-office shadowing experience (i.e. working with a client or stakeholder), and 3) resume review.
Apply by September 16th by emailing the application to SunCoastMAPS@gmail.com.

$50 – Lecture + ReceptionJoin your fellow planners from across the Tampa Bay area to celebrate the best and brightest accomplishments in the planning community.
In partnership with the Live Move Student Group at the University of South Florida, the Section is pleased to host a special guest lecture featuring Gil Penalosa. Gil is the former Commissioner of Parks for the City of Bogota and founder of the “open streets” movement. The lecture will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at the Tampa Museum of Art. Light refreshments will be served.
Following the lecture, please join us for the Section’s Annual Awards Reception on the patio overlooking the beautiful Tampa Riverwalk. The following awards will be announced and celebrated:
- Award of Excellence – Honoring an organization, initiative, planning process or project that has been conceived or implemented within the last three years.
- Distinguished Service – Honoring a planning professional or community member who has made significant contributions to the community over an extended period of time.
- Planner of the Year – Honoring a planning professional who has made significant contributions to the community or planning profession over the past year.
Hors d’oeuvres will be served. Cash bar will be available throughout the evening.
