CAMPAIGN POLICIES: Division and Chapter Related Highlights >>

National APA and AICP nominations, candidacies, and elections will soon be underway and it is important to be familiar with national policies in this regard. I am passing on the message below from national APA for your information, and ask you to take a moment to read it. Note that the policies refer to 'components', which means, among others, Chapters and Sections.

The Florida Chapter is the second largest APA chapter; is voter-rich; and plays a significant role in the outcome of national elections. This explains why the Chapter has always been strongly represented at the national level by members affiliated with the Florida Chapter. This has many obvious benefits to the Chapter and its members. At times we may have as many as four or five members holding national office or serving on national governing groups. If you also include national Division Chairs and Division Officers from Florida, the number of Florida members in national roles more than doubles or triples.

The Chapter and its Sections are allowed to endorse candidates through votes of its respective executive committees; but may not do so until all candidacies, by nomination and petition, are formally announced nationally. Also, if endorsements are made, they must also acknowledge the names of all other candidates for the position(s) for which an endorsement is made.

The Chapter has not made plans regarding any endorsements, does not always make endorsements, and of course has no need to do so until the candidacies are nationally announced and become known to us.

The information regarding national campaign policies are provided below so that everyone in a position of policy leadership, governance, and administration in the Chapter are aware of their respective responsibilities to all candidates and the campaign and election process, and the personal and professional ethical issues involved.

If the Chapter should decide to make any endorsements, it is important that these rules and policies are generally known to all of us well in advance so as not to raise any professional concerns among our members. The same holds true for Sections.

Please take a few minutes and read these, knowing that they are 'highlights' and not the complete version, but generally summarize the main responsibilities we all are expected to observe.

Thanks you for your attention to this message and my comments.
