In the Eye of the Storm – A Tour of Emergency Operations Centers
Feb. 6, 2019
1 – 4p

Over the past three years, Tallahassee has responded to three major storm events: Hurricane Matthew in 2015, Hurricane Irma in 2016, and Hurricane Michael in 2018. This heightened level of hurricane activity has had a significant impact on Tallahassee and the Florida panhandle. It has affected how we respond to extreme weather events, and how we serve the communities’ needs leading up to, during, and after these natural disasters. In the aftermath of the storms, there is heightened interest in how we prepare, respond, and recover at the local and state levels. So, what happens before and leading up to hurricane landfall?

In our guided tour of the Local (Tallahassee –Leon County) and State Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), we will take a first-hand look at how storm events are handled on a day-to-day basis, as well as the operations of these centers during extreme weather events. Participants will have the opportunity to tour these facilities and gain a better understanding of how local and State EOCs work in coordination to prepare, respond, and recover to emergencies.

Our state is very familiar with hurricanes; however our Emergency Managers at both the state and local levels deal with a wide variety of events throughout the year. This tour is designed to give you a better understanding of what the EOC will activate for and how critical the function of our Emergency Managers and the EOC is to the resiliency and recovery of our communities.

There will be a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes! The tour is limited to 25 people so register today!
