MOBILE TOUR: Tiny Houses & More
Feb. 6, 2018
1:30 – 4:30p
This year’s mobile tour will focus on two new and innovative housing developments in the Capital City.
Tallahassee is one of the first cities in Florida to create a tiny home community targeting affordability and second chances. The Dwellings is revolutionary community that uses the tiny home model to make homelessness, rare, brief, and non-recurring. It is being built by a non-profit, CESC, which wants to develop a comprehensive approach to the causes of homelessness and work to provide growth and stability for its clients.
Sizes of dwellings offered range in small, medium and large options (220 sq. ft. to 410 sq. ft.) with rents from $550 to $850 a month. There are 130 homes slated for the community spread over 30 acres. Upon completion, the grounds will contain: community gardens, a greenhouse, training/educational facilities, case management, community kitchen and gathering spaces, and laundry services.
Braemore Park is an infill development in Tallahassee’s bustling Midtown section. This Southern crafted, linear-park community will consist of 28 Low Country style homes featuring large front porches that overlook the private park and neighborhood garden house.
The project embodies the quaint Southern charm that Tallahassee is rooted in. It is situated off Thomasville Road in a highly desirable location adjacent to historical Tallahassee Nurseries. The thoughtful layout of the community is designed to promote a sense of community and low maintenance living.
Each of these two developments is very unique, providing a housing model that we have not seen in our community. These projects have the potential to set the stage for other development in Tallahassee and be used as models throughout the state. This tour will provide insight on what it takes to get these types of project through the site-planning process and built.
While most of the tour is by coach, there is some walking, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
